CONSERVATIVE Damian Hinds retained his seat in East Hampshire following last week’s general election but what do voters want from him?

To find out, the Herald asked figures from the community to finish the following sentence: In the next term of parliament, I would like East Hampshire’s MP to...

* Rod Eckles from the Alton Society: “... take the quality of new housing more seriously. We are doing permanent damage to Alton’s built and natural environment by allowing developers to build what suits them, in yielding maximum profit, instead of housing that respects the environment, and which is more sensitive to the needs of local people.”

* Jenny Griffiths from the Alton Climate Action & Network: “... push hard and urgently for action on vital policies, regulation and legislation to achieve net zero carbon and avoid ecological collapse, especially for investment in clean, frequent and cheap public transport and in very energy-efficient buildings, advocating strongly also for environmental goals and standards to be prioritised both within the UK and in all negotiations on trade deals with other countries.”

* Peter Wonson, a Country Watch coordinator: “... concentrate on developing and delivering a workable initiative to enable our undermanned police force to operate effectively. For instance: less spending significant amounts of money on pointless keyring torches and use it for policing, not for playing. Eliminate the pointless presence of an overpaid Police and Crime Commissioner, whose inflated salary could pay for two additional officers.”

* Graham de Niederhausern from the Alton Rotary Club: “... plan and fund improvements in social care and help people with disabilities.”

* Patrick Sullivan, head teacher at Eggar’s Secondary School: “... ensure school funding is back up to and better than levels in 2010, in real terms.”

* Helen Drake, Citizens Advice East Hampshire chief executive: “... take action on the issues that matter to people’s lives, so fewer local people face the same problems in the future: by making the benefit system work for everyone, helping people recover from debt, providing security for people in their jobs and homes, making sure essential services meet the needs of all consumers and protecting consumers in the energy market now and in the future.”

* Mike Gaston, Alton College principal: “... support a new post-16 education strategy as a national priority, including investment and long-term funding for colleges to deliver a learning and skills agenda, so no young person is left behind.”

* Alton Matters town centre business group said they “want an MP who treats everyone as an equal and will fight for the smaller businesses to give them greater power against the large multinationals”.
