PETERSFIELDÕS open-air swimming pool looks set to get a £14,500 grant to provide facilities for disabled swimmers.

Members of East Hampshire District CouncilÕs central area community committee have this week recommended their cabinet to give the pool a one-off grant from the councilÕs new community initiatives fund.

The application would be of great community benefit, the committee was told, and it fitted strongly the criteria for community initiative funding outlined by the council.

The management committee of the open-air pool, which is a registered charity, wants funding for a special shower, changing facilities, a self-operating pool hoist and front entrance ramp.

It estimated that the total cost of the project would be £16,000, but councillors were told the management committee intended to raise £1,500 itself.

The project has been given the full support of the South Downs Association of Disabled People.

Andrew Pattie told the meeting: ÒI have no problem with this application. The open-air pool is an excellent facility and it needs to be made available to people with disabilities.Ó
