A TOTAL of five urban post offices across South West Surrey could face closure over the next year few years.

This prediction comes from Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman Simon Cordon.

It is based on an analysis of numbers disclosed by the Chief Executive of the Post Office, David Mills, to the Financial Times in July.

Mr Mills stated that Consignia is looking to axe 33 per cent of urban offices - an "urban" post office being in an area with more than 10,000 inhabitants.

"The rural network has been under severe attack for the last two decades. Now it seems that Consignia and the government are to start punishing the so -called urban network," said Mr Cordon

"What they do not understand is that in many parts of an area like South West Surrey, the post office is an essential and integral part of the community, providing services and local economic activity which would not be replaced if closure occurs."

Mr Cordon is now appealing to Waverley Borough Council to produce an "economic impact study" which would analyse the impact on an area if the local post office closed.

"As the principal council in South West Surrey, and using its local economic development powers, Waverley is ideally placed to start compiling the evidence against closure of local post offices.

"The benefit of doing this now is that when specific local offices become singled out for the axe, we could already have the evidence to fight against closure. That's why I am asking Waverley to take action now."
