IMPROVEMENTS and alterations to Haslemere Hospital have made it a brighter and safer place for patients.

More than £100,000 has been spent on the work by the Surrey Hampshire Borders NHS Trust.

As well as health and safety improvements, a new look has been given to the reception and patient waiting areas and to one of the wards.

Spokesman for the trust Patrick McCullagh said: "I think the most important improvements, in terms of health and safety, are those we have made to the wards.

"This programme of work has made the hospital even safer."

New fire and smoke alarm systems, and the addition of extra fire doors across the hospital buildings are some of the main safety upgrades that have been completed.

Refurbishment work has also transformed two parts of the hospital.

The reception/waiting area at the front office of the hospital has been refitted with new shelves and cabinets and redecorated and the Elizabeth ward has been given a major facelift.

The ward's bathroom and utility areas have been completely refurbished, and the ward itself has been repainted.

Patients and staff have also been given more space to recover and work as some of the surplus beds have been moved elsewhere.

The work is part of an on-going scheme to improve the appearance and general safety of the hospital.

General manager of the hospital, Rose Parry, said: "The place definitely looks brighter and more cheerful.

"I think it is good for all of our patients that we have been able to spruce it up."
