Landlords have pleaded for change as bank closures in Farnham have left some pubs facing a monetary crisis.

Some hotspots could be pressed into going card-only as landlords are finding it increasingly hard to bank in town.

The departure of Lloyds, NatWest, Santander and Barclays has left the Post Office as the only feasible place for many to bank and get change.

But some like Martin Groves of the Hop Blossom have been left exasperated by queues, confusion and a lack of available cash.

He doesn’t want to switch to card-only because many still pay with cash and he’s fearful of losing their trade.

“Since all the banks have closed there’s nowhere to do business banking,” said Mr Groves, who often travels to Aldershot and Fleet instead of using the Post Office inside the TG Jones on The Borough.

“Other people I know are using their private accounts but we don’t have that option as we have a business debit account with Lloyds.

He added: “I don’t really want to go to Aldershot with my banking. If someone could get a banking hub working that would be interesting.”

Bosses at The Queens Head, William Cobbett and Borrellis have all had similar difficulties with paying in and withdrawing cash at the Post Office.

“Tell me about it,” said David Quick of the latter, adding: “They want some sort of identity book and change card and won’t give you change without it.”

While Nationwide’s commitment to stay in the town until 2030 has given “breathing space”, their continued presence means Farnham cannot qualify for a new banking hub.

Gregory Stafford MP says he’ll keep pressing the Treasury and LINK with long-term options unclear.

He said: “If either the Post Office or the last bank were to close, we would have to start from scratch and that’s not good enough for residents or local traders.”
