Sir - Some months ago I asked South West Trains to install a through-train service in the rush hours directly from Alton to Guildford without the necessity of a change at Aldershot, as is now the case.

As your readers who have to journey from the Alton and Alresford areas will know, the traffic congestion in the rush hours along the Farnham by-pass is horrendous. So is the getting into Guildford. A car journey which takes 20 minutes during the day by car in the rush hour takes an hour added on to that.

The manager of South West Trains at Woking has now informed me that it is impossible to fit two or three more trains in during rush hour, giving as one reason the single track between Alton and Farnham.

From my own long experience os using trains in this area I am sure that , with a little timetable manipulations, and the employment of more guards and drivers, a rush hour service could be fitted in.

I hope that those of your readers who have to experience travel difficulties between Alton and Guildford will try to exert pressure on South West Trains to achieve this very necessary addition to their local service.
