A TALENTED Surrey quilt artist has scooped a major international prize at Europe’s largest patchwork and quilting event, The Festival of Quilts.
Susan Sami, from Farnham, won the Novice Quilt category, a new category for 2018 for those who have been quilting for less than three years, in The Festival of Quilts’ acclaimed competition and £1,000 prize money.
The festival attracted around 25,000 visitors from across the world, with more than 800 entries judged by a panel of leading figures from the art and quilting community.
Susan was praised for her entry, Global Harming (pictured right), which was inspired by the impact of global wars on - and responses to - refugees.
It was described by judges as: “A magnificent and haunting composition with a subtle and effective use of colour together with highly innovative quilting technique.”
Anna Baptiste, event director for the festival, said: “The quilts entered into this competition are stitched with breathtaking detail, intricate design and outstanding workmanship.
“We congratulate Susan on her wonderful entry.”
The prize-winning quilt will be on display in the Textile Galleries at The Knitting & Stitching Show at London’s Alexandra Palace in October and in Harrogate in November.
Next year’s festival takes place from August 1-4.
