THE roadworks misery for Upper Hale residents is set to be extended long into the new year, with Surrey County Council set to install speed-reducing measures in Alma Lane in the immediate wake of SGN’s ongoing major gas upgrade.

Temporary traffic lights have been in place between the junction with Ball and Wicket Lane and the Tesco Express in Alma Lane since early November, with gas provider SGN replacing an outdated metal gas mains with modern plastic pipe.

These works are scheduled to continue until at the latest January 13, after which Surrey County Council has announced a further series of roadworks lasting around 20 days.

The council’s scheme will include new speed cushions, signs and lining as well as drainage and kerbing work between the junctions with Heath Lane and Beam Hollow, and also work to improve accessibility to the bus stop by the Heath Lane junction.

It comes three years after a 62-year-old Farnham man Edward Painter died when his Mitsubishi Shogun came off Alma Lane at the junction with Heath Lane and crashed into a nearby home.

Surrey’s safety improvements will be implemented over three phases, with workmen due on site Monday to Friday only between 8.30am and 5pm.

The county council has requested residents keep the road free from parked vehicles during the works, and has apologised for any disruption caused.
