IT’S the end of an era for the Royal Voluntary Service in Farnham, which for the past 50 years has been helping some of Waverley’s most vulnerable people with its popular meals on wheels service.

Following cutbacks, the service has been replaced by a new scheme run out of three of the borough’s day centres.

The Brightwells Gostrey Centre will continue to deliver the meals on wheels service following its relocation to the Farnham Memorial Hall this year, alongside two other day centres – Haslewey in Haslemere and Rowleys in Cranleigh.

The service was discontinued by Surrey and Waverley councils after a review found dissatisfaction with the quality of the meals and falling numbers of clients.

Helen Talbot, former meals on wheels service manager, for the Royal Voluntary Service, said: “I have now transferred over and so have many of the volunteers, some of which have been with the service for over 20 years.

“This job is more than just a meals on wheels service, we help clients who have fallen, we make sure everyone is all right and we make friends along the way.

“Initially we didn’t know what was going to happen, we were just told that the service was going to stop running and then Waverley came up with this new scheme.

“The meals will be cooked freshly everyday, whereas before they were cooked from frozen – so the food has improved.

“The Royal Voluntary Service goes back to war time, it has a big history, and has been going in Farnham for around 50 years. We have around 38 to 40 clients in Farnham alone, and then we also have the day centre clients.

“Most of our clients have transferred over. I was with the service since 2013, my new role is community meals co-ordinator.

“I am the only member of staff to have moved across. So the last day was filled with mixed emotions, excitement for a new project but sadness to see the other staff go.
