A THEFT reduction scheme designed to tackle retail crime in Farnham is being launched next week.

The scheme, which will be run by local security specialists X-Mil, aims to help the town's retailers improve in-store security and reduce levels of shoplifting. Participating retailers will have a fully-managed radio system by which to alert each other to the presence of known or suspected criminals and to contact the local police when necessary.

It costs £5 per week or £250 per year and includes 24-hour security monitoring and back-up. The advanced radio systems are able to record messages which can be used as evidence in subsequent court proceedings and live links with the local police ensure that shoplifters can be swiftly apprehended.

Participating retailers will be encouraged to display a sticker in their windows which will act as a further deterrent.

The scheme is supported by Farnham Town Council, Farnham Chamber of Commerce and Surrey Police.

"Some of the larger retailers in the town are reported to be losing stock worth up to £5,000 per week to shoplifters", said X-Mil commercial director Martin Tweed.

"By keeping in constant radio contact and working together, we can make it harder for criminals to operate in the area, encourage genuine shoppers and increase the profitability of our local shops."

Similar radio link initiatives have been successfully launched in a number of areas including the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Guildford, resulting in a significant reduction in shoplifting incidents.
