A PETERSFIELD school has come to the rescue of a village counterpart that was forced to close for emergency repairs.
Herne Junior School gave a first-class lesson in co-operation last week when it housed youngsters from Sheet Primary School for the day.
The impromptu merger followed a gas leak outside the primary school last Tuesday that left staff and pupils temporarily homeless.
Workers were forced to turn off the school's gas supply in midweek, leaving the building without heating during the recent cold snap.
Staff initially thought the smell was 'Le Pong' from across the Channel before realising it was more serious and called the gas company's emergency number.
