THE cheers of England fans were nearly drowned out by those of the little girls and boys upon seeing two ‘real’ unicorns at Wrecclesham Village Fete on Sunday.
Glorious weather drew in huge crowds to Wrecclesham recreation ground for this year’s fete, which again kicked off in traditional fashion with a church service in the marquee, led by the new vicar of St Peter’s Church, Rev Jacqueline Drake-Smith.
This was followed by a packed afternoon of fun and games for all the family, stalls, competitions, food, drink and entertainment.
An undisputed highlight was the presence of two unicorns - closely resembling a pair of Shetland ponies, both adorning horns and one with its mane coloured pink.
Children also enjoyed a Punch and Judy show, petting zoo and donkey rides, while entertainment was also provided by John the Juggler (and fire eater), Farnham Brass Band, Rowledge Hand Bell Ringers and cheerleaders The Wonder Girls - not to mention the England v Panama game in the club house.
The dog show was heavily patronised with prizes pawed out for the prettiest lady and handsomest boy, the ‘waggiest tail in Wrecclesham’, best trick and fastest sit.
There was also plenty of entries into the flower and produce show, with councillor Paula Dunsmore handing out the prizes.
The village stocks also proved popular, adding to the obligatory coconut shy, ice cream van and tea and cakes courtesy of St Peter’s Church, as well as a model railway exhibition.
The fete closed with the drawing of the raffle and results of the silent auction, boasting prizes generously donated by an array of businesses - the proceeds of which will contribute to next year’s fete and a variety of local causes.
Fete committee member Gail Whattingham hailed this year’s “proper village fete” a great success and afterwards thanked all those who supported the event, including sponsors, volunteers and businesses. “Roll on next year”, she added.
