SURREY Police is warning motorists not to travel unless "absolutely essential" after the 'Mini Beast from the East’ brought a fresh flurry of snow to the area on Sunday morning.

The emergency services have closed both the A31 Hogs Back eastbound, between the junctions with the A331 and A3, and the A331 Blackwater Valley Relief Road "for safety concerns".

As of 8am, Surrey Police were reporting that the westbound carriageway of the Hogs Back remains open - although officers are advising motorists to avoid travelling if possible.

The force’s roads policing unit posted on Twitter: "Snow continues to fall in many parts of the county and we still advise you NOT to travel at this time unless ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL.

"Keep an eye on the forecast for updates. If you must drive, clear your vehicle of snow, check your route and allow plenty of time."

The emergency services are dealing with a number of snow-related traffic incidents, including numerous overturned cars plus a person trapped in their vehicle in Hindhead, and are also warning that the A3 at Thursley is currently blocked southbound "by stuck vehicles".

Rushmoor Fire Station posted on Twitter: "Due to heavy snow and abandoned cars the A331 Blackwater Valley Relief road is closed both ways so be aware of the road conditions."

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service added: "Please take care on the roads in Surrey today, although gritters have done a great job, the roads are very slippery and the emergency Services are busy dealing with road traffic incidents."

Stagecoach South has also reported that it is unable to operate any services in the Farnham, Bordon and Aldershot areas on Sunday morning due to the poor road and weather conditions.

South Western Railway is reporting that services on the Alton line to London Waterloo via Farnham are currently running "on time", but urge passengers to check for updates before they travel.

Other reported closures include local attractions such as Millers Ark Farm and Oak Park Golf Club in Crondall, while Weydon School has cancelled this morning's Surrey Karate Club session.

The Rotary Club of Farnham's charity Cyclathon at Farnham Maltings is still going ahead despite the snow, however, with the club tweeting: "Cyclathon @farnhammaltings well underway. Participants and marshalls are in from all parts of Farnham. Main roads busy with traffic but drive carefully in the slushy snow."

A Met Office 'amber' weather warning will remain in place for Surrey until 9am on Sunday, with icy patches forecast to develop on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Travel delays on roads are likely, stranding some vehicles and passengers. Some delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are also likely, and some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces are possible.

A less-severe 'yellow' weather warning will remain in place throughout Monday, warning that ice is likely widely on roads, pavements and cycle paths - increasing the risk of accidents, as well as injuries due to falls.
