Petersfield fielded just 11 players against opponents they had been lucky to beat before Christmas.

However, unlike the previous week, Petersfield started the sharper side and had lost all signs of the lethargy that had characterised their performance against Aldershot.

Nick Budden and Marcus Handley started to orchestrate things in midfield, frequently supplying Graham Stopher and Dean Tutt with balls into the inside-forward channels.

From one such move, Tutt let fly an exocet missile of a shot from a narrow angle and the Southampton 'keeper was left helpless as the ball whizzed through the gap between his helmet and upright.

This spurred Petersfield on. Duncan McDermott and Stopher worked the ball to Dean Tutt who blasted it across goal and the Southampton 'keeper deflected into his own net as he attempted to get out of the way.

Worse was to follow for the unfortunate goalkeeper when another rocket from Tutt hit the temple region of his helmet. The game had to be stopped for several minutes while he regained his composure (Tutt had been first to rush to his aid).

Petersfield then slackened the pace and the visitors won several short corners, all of which were efficiently dealt with by Paul Martin in goal.

In the second half, Petersfield got players behind the ball, allowing Southampton more possession, but always looking capable of scoring on the break.

Stopher should have killed the game off when he missed a good late chance.

This week, Petersfield travel to Woolmer Hill, hoping to avenge their Hampshire Cup defeat at the hands of Haslemere (3 pm start).
