FOOTBALL - Farnham Town's good run in the Courage Combined Counties League came to an end when they lost 2-1 at Reading Town. Defeat came at just the wrong time for Farnham who entertain Viking Greenford in a vital Challenge Cup semi-final this weekend.

Aldershot Town's outside chance of winning the Ryman League title all but disappeared with their 2-1 defeat at Canvey Island. However, the Shots consolved themselves by beating AFC Totton 2-0 in midweek to earn a Hampshire Senior Cup sem-final against arch rivals Basingstoke. Aldershot meet Dagenham, the runaway league leaders, at the Rec this Saturday.

Alton Town and Liss Athletic continue to enjoy contrasting fortunes in the Hampshire Premier League. Alton lost 3-0 at home to West Wight, while Liss continued their sparkling form with a 3-1 win at Horndean. Kevin Rowsell scored twice – one from the penalty spot, the other with an unstoppable 20-yard shot.

Two Surrey Intermediate League sides clashed in the County Cup semi-finals and Chiddingfold pulled off an upset by thrashing 'form' side Badshot Lea 5-1. Gary Newell scored twice in a brilliant display by Chiddingfold who can now look forward to a prestigious Surrey Intermediate Cup Final at either Woking or Kingstonian.

RUGBY - Alton tuned up for the weekend's Hampshire Cup semi-final at Havant with a crushing 46-10 win over Tonbridge Juddians in London Div. 2 (South). No. 8 Malcolm Osborne led the scoring spree with three tries.

Farnham lost for only the second time this season when they met KCS, the Surrey Div. I leaders. There was very little between the sides, but Farnham were punished for some errors and the home team edged home 18-11.

HOCKEY - Haslemere continued their habit of forcing their way back into contention, only to throw it away at the finish. At 3-3, they looked good for a point, but Bournemouth stole all three points with a last-gasp winner.

ATHLETICS - Aldershot, Farnham & District AC gave the best all-round performance at the national cross-country championships and Chris Thompson confirmed himself as the country's top junior by winning the Under-20 race.
