LEADING green campaigner Terena Plowright is celebrating the success of her 'Greening Petersfield' project this week with the news that householders have committed to saving a massive 23 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Her two-week campaign put Petersfield at the forefront of the battle against climate change when she challenged townspeople to take on board at least five out of eight energy-saving measures and show their backing for the green Petersfield campaign by displaying a logo in their windows. The logos sprung up across the town in both businesses and private homes, and over the past few days Ms Plowright and fellow environmental campaigners have been walking every road in the town to count up their success. An elated Terena told The Herald on Wednesday: "A tonne of carbon dioxide is equal to the volume of a good size, four-bedroom house. "We counted the logos by wards throughout Petersfield and St Peter's ward showed the highest commitment, so many congratulations to all who live there and to everyone in the town who has committed to the 'Greening' campaign." A 'Greening' campaign website is now being set up and will be launched early next week. It can be accessed on http://www.greening-campaign.co.uk. Details">www.greening-campaign.co.uk. Details of all those who won the prizes will be on the website. Terena is now working alongside Petersfield Tomorrow and is looking for anyone interested in their immediate environment or in food issues to contact her through the website. A meeting date will be announced shortly. She told The Herald: "The campaign has been a remarkable journey and many people have shown me how supportive they are of measures to stop this beast called 'climate change'. The general public are truly inspiring." Last week, South Harting launched its own greening scheme, with Terena's help, and this week East Meon, East Tisted and Liss have all announced their intention to set up campaigns. Terena said: "The South Harting scheme is a tremendous success and the launch was amazing. I was terribly moved by a poem read out by a little girl who cannot have been more than five, begging us all to save the polar bears." And in Petersfield, 11-year-old Joel Hepworth has been so inspired by the Greening Petersfield campaign that he has written to the people of the town urging them to take action to fight climate change. Joel, who attends Herne Junior School, has also been spreading the message among his fellow pupils with the help of his class teacher Steven Zenklusen. In his letter addressed simply to 'The People of Petersfield', he said: "I think we should all be more friendly to the environment. I am 11 years old and I would like a world that is nice to live in when I get older. "If everyone does their bit, then together we can save the planet for our future. Please read your Greening Petersfield leaflet and do what you can to help." Meanwhile, Terena said she was delighted that a Petersfield firm, Energy Footprint, had offered to evaluate 10 houses free. This, she said, would reduce carbon dioxide output by between two and five tonnes for each house taking part. Energy Footprint, she said, had also committed to donate 10 per cent of future house evaluations to the Petersfield campaign, and 10 per cent of business evaluations to The Sustainability Centre in East Meon.
