Traders in Farnham have voiced concerns following news that Downing Street will temporarily close to through traffic in the late summer.

Business owners say the Farnham Infrastructure Programme (FIP), which promises a revitalised town centre, has not yet led to a vast dip in trade. However, they fear the temporary pedestrianisation of Downing Street for major roadworks from August to November could have an impact.

Amanda Bollini, showroom manager at Nicky Hayes Interiors, said: “For a shop like us it is important for people to come down and have a look at what we do.

“We have spoken to customers who have said the works are putting them off coming into Farnham on top of the increase in car parking fees.”

Ms Bollini also called for greater support for local businesses during the disruption.

“More should be done to support the traders in the town during this difficult period including subsidising parking for Farnham traders,” she said.

Jake Marsh, manager of Sweet Lizzy, The Farnham Sweet Shop, said the effects of the scheme remain to be seen.

“It is far too early to determine if the vision of the FIP will match the reality and we will have to wait and see,” he said.

“There have been issues with noise during the works when they are drilling but we are yet to notice a decrease in footfall to the shop.”

Downing Street will close to through traffic from August 18 until November 1, with access maintained for residents, deliveries, and emergency services. The road will reopen over the Christmas period, before closing again in January as works resume.

The phased works follow major upgrades at the Longbridge junction and mark a milestone in Farnham’s transformation, with new layouts, greening, loading bays, and crossings all planned.
