IN a heartfelt tribute to Glenn Hack, who was found dead on July 12 at the Simmonds Court homeless shelter in Farnham, his family described him as an “extremely talented man” but a “tormented soul”.
Police were called to the shelter in Victoria Road at 7.22pm, following reports of a “concern for safety”. Officers found the 41-year-old’s body and a post-mortem results showed he had died from multiple injuries.
Two men were arrested on suspicion of murder and have now been charged. Andrew Savage, 47, of no fixed abode, was charged last Thursday night with murdering Mr Hack. He has appeared at South East Surrey Magistrates Court in Redhill and will appear at Guildford Crown Court in October.
Gareth Wheeler, 46, of Victoria Road, Farnham, was charged last Friday morning with assisting an offender. He has appeared at East Surrey Magistrates Court in Redhill and was given conditional bail but he breached his bail conditions on Monday and has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance at Guildford Crown Court on August 7.
“No-one is ever prepared for hearing the sudden news of the death of a loved one – and it was no exception for us when we were told of Glenn’s passing,” Mr Hack’s family said in a statement issued last Friday. “Although he had his faults and had to battle with some personal demons, deep down Glenn was a good and kind, but sometimes tortured soul. He was a free spirit, a bit of a wanderer with a character which would not allow him to live a regular nine to five life.
“He was an extremely talented man who, if he had put his mind to it, could have been anything he wanted to be. Glenn was a warm, kind and funny character who did not deserve what happened to him.
“He will be greatly missed by his loving family and we hope that people will respect his memory and our wishes to be left to grieve for him in peace.”
Simmonds Court homeless shelter is run by the charity Transform Housing and Support. Andrea Cannon, the charity’s director of client strategy and deliverance, said: “We are shocked and saddened by this news. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this time.
“The police are currently investigating this incident and we are doing everything we can to assist with their investigation.”
