Farnham residents are encouraged to come together this Sunday, May 12 to support this year’s Abbeyfield Wey Valley Society Charity Fun Day.
As part of the fun day, from midday to 4pm in Gostrey Meadow, the former Beijing Tai Chi champion and founder of Tai Chi Guildford, Dr Luke Zhang, will be demonstrating Tai Chi.
Residents of the Abbeyfield nursing home have regular Tai Chi sessions with Dr Zhang.
The annual charity fun day is a family event to raise funds for the not for profit nursing home organisation.
Tai Chi, originally from China, is becoming very popular in the UK and Dr Zhang runs classes at several local nursing homes including Abbeyfield.
It is essentially slow, gentle physical movements - an ideal way to keep fit for people of any age. As participants focus on these physical movements it can also help many people to relax.
Tai Chi Guildford was founded in 2009 by Dr Luke Zhang – a former medical doctor and twice Tai Chi Champion of Beijing.
Luke came to Guildford to complete his MBA at the University of Surrey and has subsequently used his medical experience and Tai Chi expertise to teach local people of all ages, abilities, mobility and fitness levels to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of what many people call “walking meditation”.
Tai Chi can also be practised sitting down.
Commenting on the Abbeyfield Charity Fun Day, Luke said: “I always enjoy working with the Abbeyfield residents in Farnham, so I’m delighted to be supporting their Charity Fun Day – which promises to be a great event.
"It’s great to see people of all ages getting the benefits of Tai Chi for their physical and mental wellbeing. For many people Tai Chi can be a great addition to their lives, keeping fit and supporting mindfulness and relaxation at the same time.
"You’re never too old – or too young - to enjoy the benefits from Tai Chi!”
