WORLD Radio Day on February 13 brought back memories of the shock announcement of King Edward VIII’s abdication in 1936 for Bronwyn Barton, 95.
Mrs Barton and Eileen Wilmott, 90, both residents of Huntington and Langham care home in Hindhead, recalled key radio moments, notably the death of George V, as part of the celebrations.
Mrs Barton (pictured with Georgia Hoare) said: “I do remember when he abdicated, yes. It was not a very happy time – people were down in the dumps.”
One of her favourite shows featured DJ Jack Jackson on the BBC Light Programme, which ran from 1945 to 1967. He compered Record Roundup.
Care home director Charlie Hoare said: “We need to capture these memories while we can if we’re to learn anything.”
