GREATHAM Parish Council was left in turmoil this week when six councillors resigned following allegations of bullying and intimidation. Chairman Diane Buckland and councillors Judy Onslow, Martin Chennell, David Rudd, Ray Flack, and Elwyn Evans all tendered their resignation at this month's annual parish meeting on Monday. Since the elections in May last year, the council has been plagued by rumours and alleged harrasment. The council has now ground to a complete halt as all the resignations took immediate effect. The surprise move sees just one councillor remain in office - Alan Bridgman. As such, the parish council does not have enough councillors to meet and act. New elections must be held in order to determine which of the 800 parishioners will become parish councillors. In the meantime, the help of East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) has been enlisted. It is hoped that EHDC will use its reserved powers to appoint persons to fill the vacancies until other councillors are elected and can take office. The council's locum clerk, Chris Youngs, passed copies of the six resignation letters to the Herald on Tuesday, and on the same day Mr Bridgman supplied a copy of a letter noting his intention to stay. Ms Buckland, in her resignation letter, said, although she had tried to do her best, the council had not been able to function properly since May last year. She apologised to all those who voted for her in the 2007 election. For information on becoming a councillor, e-mail [email protected]">[email protected].
