Ukrainian families are still struggling to find accommodation in the UK as the war with Russia shows no sign of stopping.

The grandparents of a family living in Farnham cannot find anywhere to live and cannot stay with their loved ones because of a lack of space.

They come from Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkiv and had to leave to escape increasing Russian attacks.

Kate Larmer from Rowledge, who founded the Farnham Homes for Ukraine group with Tatyana Moskalenko in 2022, says finding accommodation locally is becoming difficult and problematic.

She said: “We have a family who have been in Farnham now for about 18 months, maybe even two years.

“They were one of the first ones to come over and they live in a two-bedroomed flat with their daughter, but they don't really have room for the grandparents.

“Because the situation has been going on for so long and it's getting really dire, the grandparents are now willing to leave and want to be with their families.”

Waverley Borough Council does pay a month’s rent for Ukrainians and up to six months in some cases with a deposit.

Universal Credit may also help towards rent payments – but Kate believes there is stigma around renting out to people who are on that type of support.

Also Kate says private landlords are very strict in their requirements, often demanding a guarantor which some families might not have.

Kate added: “We are trying to find people who are willing to offer up annexes or who know someone who is more flexible about being willing to rent to people who are from Ukraine.”
