A PLAQUE dedicated to the memory of long-standing Farnham Swimability volunteer Gill Ely has been unveiled at Farnham Leisure Centre.
Gill, a volunteer for more than 30 years campaigned for the recently-installed power opening automatic doors into the main changing village and the disabled changing room.
The work to improve access to the swimming facilities for those with disabilities and other users was funded by Waverley Borough Council in partnership with Places Leisure, which runs the leisure centre, and Farnham Swimability.
Alan Taylor, chairman of Farnham Swimability, said: “This was a great joint effort to improve the disabled access into the changing areas. We’d like to thank the leisure team at Waverley and Dave Webb, the leisure centre manager, for their support”.
Councillor David Beaman, Waverley’s portfolio holder for health, wellbeing and culture, said: “It’s a fitting tribute to the fantastic work carried out by Gill Ely who selflessly volunteered for so many years and whose campaigning will have such a positive impact for those with disabilities.”
Cllr Pat Evans, mayor of Farnham, unveiled the plaque and spoke highly of Gill Ely’s volunteering work for the Farnham community over many years.
Emma Das also represented the borough council and David Gill, Farnham Sports Council. John Ely spoke highly of his late wife’s support for Farnham Swimability.
Farnham Swimability offers exclusive, assisted exercise in the main pool on Wednesday afternoons between 2pm and 3pm.
