Organisers of a footballing tribute in Wrecclesham to a much-missed youngster have netted £6,000 and counting for two amazing initiatives.

Everything was pitch perfect when footballers, fans, friends and family members gathered at Westfield Lane for The George Esders charity match.

The event saw coaches from Badshot Lea FC Youth and Colts compete for the inaugural George Esders Trophy in memory of the 12-year-old youth player who died last year. The response was both incredible and poignant.

“It’s times like this where the power of a local community can truly come together,” said co-organiser, Gemma Wheeler, following the May fundraiser.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who played a part in making the day so special.

“From those that helped organise, played in the match, cheered, donated, sponsored, placed a bid or even just bought a burger – you all did your bit.”

Gemma added: “The support has been overwhelming and deeply appreciated by everyone at Badshot Lea FC and by the whole of George’s family and friends.”

The match began after a minute’s silence for George was followed by a five-minute applause in a nod to the youngster’s shirt number.

The BLFC U7 to U11 coaches claimed the silverware but William, George’s brother, converted a penalty and scored a great goal for the U12-16 counterparts.

Player and coach Nathan Hills was named player of the day on a fun, emotional and special occasion for everyone involved. Proceeds from the event will go towards Sasha’s Project, a charity which provides a safe place for young people in a crisis, and a memorial bench at Weybourne recreation ground.

There’s more funds to come as more “exciting” items will be auctioned at forthcoming weekend tournament while organisers want to make the tournament “bigger and better” year on year.
