A newspaper celebrating the sporting success of students at Weydon School in Farnham has been shortlisted for a school media award.

Weydon World, a 24-page colour production with a print run of 2,500 was a smash hit last summer featuring tales of sporting prowess and achievements in football, sailing, track and field – you name it!

Local companies sponsored the publication by buying ad space, an area that the school wants to push a bit further for the next edition!

This coming Monday, Weydon director of sport Karl Brown and some students will travel to Stationers’ Hall, Ave Maria Lane, London hoping to pick up one of several prizes on offer at the Shine 2023 school media awards.

Industry-related workshops will run throughout the morning to allow pupils to talk with Shine’s sponsors and learn more about career opportunities within the publishing industry.

Shine aim to celebrate communication skills throughout the ever-changing media world; some school magazines are often submitted as PDF files with links to embedded videos and podcasts.

Robert Mather, Master, The Stationers’ Company offers not only awards; bursaries for post-graduate degrees in courses related to the print trade are available too.

The 600-year-old Stationers’ Company has more than 900 members involved in communication and content industries such as paper, print, publishing, packaging, office products, newspapers, broadcasting and online media.

The brilliant Weydon World newspaper is an independent production – but the Herald has also teamed up with several schools locally in recent years to help produce student newspapers. To find out more, please email us at [email protected]
