THANKS to the teachings at Karma Kidz Yoga (KKY) in Farnham, children have been spontaneously thinking up random acts of kindness for others, and raising money for charity along the way.

In class, the yogis have not only been learning about the physical and mental benefits of yoga, but also to live the KKY values – Love, Kindness, and Respect.

The yogis have wholeheartedly embraced the ideals, and their teacher Tris hears regularly from parents about the thoughtful things that the yogis are doing outside of class.

Recently a group of year three yogis decided that they wanted to raise money for KKY’s chosen charity, Amani Children’s Home. This is a charity that KKY yoga sponsors on behalf of the children.

A percentage of the money received from the classes is donated each month to Amani, to benefit homeless children in Tanzania. The yogis get regular updates on how the children at Amani are doing, and are proud to be making a difference in the lives of others.

The girls planned a bake sale, and worked for weeks promoting the event and baking lots of cakes to sell, and managed to raise £128 to send to Amani.

They were absolutely thrilled to receive a thank you video in return from the Amani kids. Another young yogi, Danny, raised £8 by doing jobs around the house and giving his mum shoulder rubs.

Flowers were the key for Annabel, who set up a flower stall outside her home to raise money for her school, and Florence saw a child in distress and took the time to sit with them and teach them the KKY calming breath technique she had learnt in yoga class.

These are just a few examples of how the children are making a difference. Yoga teacher Tris, said: “I am so incredibly proud of all of my yogis.

“I hear some wonderful stories from parents on how the yogis use what they’ve learnt in class to support others. Whether it be sharing the poses or breathing techniques they’ve learnt, or simply looking for opportunities to show love, kindness or respect.

“I am always telling them ‘You may be small but you are mighty. You have the power to change the world’. It’s so nice to see them growing in self-confidence and making such a positive impact, the fact that they do it without prompting brings me joy.”

Victoria, whose children attend KKY classes, added: “My two children have been attending yoga classes with Tris & Karma Kids yoga since they were 18 months old. They now practise at after school clubs and benefit in so many ways.

“They know how to use their breath as a tool to help calm themselves. They learn how to work with partners and form trust. They have also more obviously become confident in their body’s movement and strength. They love their yoga.”
