ALTON Social Bowls Club rounded off another successful season with a fine team effort to win the Bowls Hampshire Mixed Top Club event.

The final stages were played out at Banister Park BC on Sunday and Social beat Atherley BC in a close semi-final (3 pts to 2), with wins for the ladies and men’s singles and the triple.

Fareham BC have often been a stumbling block for Alton Social in the past, but not in this final. Social’s triples and pairs built up early leads and with the four just ahead, it became clear that a win from either of the singles would seal victory.

Adam White struggled to get going in the men’s singles, but Hazel Marke, having been 10 shots adrift, eventually got home by five.

The pairing of Gary Johnson and Brenda Plumpton and triple of Basa Smith, Margaret Holden and Mark Fyfield completed sizable wins, while the four of Sheila Goodwin, Caroline Goodeve, Gordon Summerhill and Dick Holden were leading by three shots when Fareham conceded.

Dick Holden, Mark Fyfield and Adam White won the Bowls Hampshire County Triples, overturning a seven-shot deficit to win by six against Pyestock.

Margaret Holden reached the Hampshire Singles final, losing to Annie Pearce of Atherley. The same pair met in the county Champion of Champions final and Holden took her revenge, winning 21-5.

Alton Social ladies, Thornbury Trophy winners two years running, lost to Highcliffe in the semi-final.

Several Social bowlers qualified for the national competitions at Leamington Spa, but honours eluded Hazel Marke and Brenda Plumpton (senior ladies pairs), Margaret Holden (Champion of Champions and national singles) and Dick Holden, Mark Fyfield and Adam White (men’s triples).

Social ladies won the more local Gazette Cup, while Gary Johnson lost in the Basingstoke & District Champion of Champions final.
