IN the four years since Alton Social’s Hazel Marke and Margaret Holden formed their partnership, they have been Hampshire Pairs losing semi-finalists, winners, and after a barren year, they were back in the final this season.

They were up against Cove BC’s Donna Marsland and Donna Taylor, but rain forced the final to be abandoned at Banister Park (Eastleigh) after four ends, with the two Donnas leading 6-3.

The match resumed some days later at Hook BC and the Social duo adjusted to the green quickly, gaining nine shots over the first three ends and taking a six-shot lead that was never really challenged. Social eventually ran out winners by 26 shots to 17.

There was more success for the Alton Social ladies as the rink of Sue Murray, Sheila Goodwin, Flo Ward and Brenda Plumpton completed a fine win over Margaret Hankin’s Fleet Social four in the North Hants Fours final.

Alton Social were also in the Petersfield Cup final and completed an eight-shot win over Stedham. The pair of Marc Gorman and Caroline Goodeve and four of Flo Ward, Bernie Murray, Kate Fyfield and Dave Atwell both won by one shot, while the triple of Sue Murray, Ken Ward and Alice Atwell triumphed by six.

Social men finally secured the Basingstoke Fours League championship with a crushing 5-0 victory over St Mary Bourne in their last match.

The Basingstoke Triples League team came a creditable third and the Whitchurch League side finished mid-table after a strong late run. The Stan Hardman team qualified from their section.
