CHAWTON Park IBC has hosted two indoor bowls competitions, both supported financially by East Hampshire District Councillor Andrew Joy, Alton Sports Council and the Rotary Clubs of Alton & Four Marks and Medstead.

The first tournament was for outdoor clubs from the EHDC area. Twelve teams competed in a round-robin event, followed by positional play-offs.

The eventual winners were Petersfield BC who beat Alton BC in the final. A two-course meal followed and the trophies were presented by Alton Sports Council vice-chairman Brian Scowcroft, who thanked all the sponsors and especially George Roberts for masterminding the tournament.

Members of the very active Chawton Park coaching team organised the fifth annual Junior Tournament, the only one of its kind in the county.

The age groups are U12, U15 and U18, and 34 young competitors battled it out to become pool winners and reach the play-off finals.

The standard was exceptionally high, with two Junior England and several County players in the field.

The comradeship and sportsmanship of the young players, allied to skill and competitiveness, delighted the large crowd.

The new shirts proudly worn by Chawton Park juniors were designed by club members and sourced locally by Swift Industries with financial help from Alton Sports Council and the aforementioned Rotary Clubs.

The players all received certificates from Town Mayor Matthew Bayliss and the trophies were presented by Maxine Fletcher (Hampshire and South of England regional organiser for English Bowls youth development), Bill Jackson (Hampshire IBA juniors vice-president) and Sheila Goodwin (Chawton Park coaching co-ordinator).
