HIGHLIGHT of the week at Chawton Park Indoor Bowling Club was provided by Dick Holden, Mark Fyfield and skip Adam White who recorded a National Triples Area Final win over Bournemouth’s Nick Revell, Chris Daniels and skip Peter Ward by 16 shots to 8.
The Chawton trio will now meet Dorchester at a neutral venue for the right to go forward to the last 16 at the National Finals.
Unfortunately for the club, the draws for the Hampshire Mixed Pairs and Men’s Pairs pitted Chawton members against each other. First, Alice and Dave Attwell progressed at the expense of Barry Smith and Brenda Plumpton, 20 shots to 13.
The other match was close throughout, with only one shot between them going into the 21st and last end. Mark Fyfield and Adam White picked up two shots to secure a 20-17 win over Barry Smith and Dave Turner.
The Hampshire Ladies pairing of Beryl Collier and Margaret Leppard travelled to Atherley IBC to take on Eileen Askell and Liz Russell. The Atherley duo proved too strong on their own green and won comfortably, 21-11.
Chawton Park Ladies took on Victory IBC in the Riversmeet League. Margaret Leppard’s rink had a decisive 23-10 win and Margaret Holden’s team managed a hard-fought draw, 17-17.
The away rink skipped by Beryl Collier led for most of the match and built a five-shot advantage, only to falter towards the end and had to settle for a 20-20 draw.
Brenda Plumpton’s rink, trailing for much of the time, fought back gamely, but lost by five shots. A good team effort secured overall victory for Chawton by 76 shots to 68.
In friendly matches, Chawton defeated visiting North Hants Women’s BA on four rinks by an overall 118 shots to 75.
Next up were five triples from Haslemere BC and although only winning on three of the five rinks, the overall result was a somewhat conclusive 103-55 in Chawton’s favour.
The week ended with Chawton Park hosting the annual East Hants Tournament, with 12 teams playing in two leagues. The result was a win for the Alton Sports Council team of Mary and Peter Slingo and Norma and Brian Craighill who defeated Alton in the final.
