THE ‘final’ final of the Frensham RBL Bowls Club championships took place last Friday, nearly two weeks after the weather had put an early end to finals day.

The delayed matches were spread out over the following 14 days.

The Badger Cup match between Ron Sibbick and Bert Pharo went right to the wire, both scoring 20 shots after 31 ends. There could be only one winner and after the last eight bowls had been delivered, Pharo scored two to clinch the men’s singles title.

The ladies’ championship final between Sheila Haytree and Pat Smith was also a close-run things. Smith finally prevailed by 21 shots to 18.

The Mileham Trophy was contested by Sheila and Gordon Haytree and Jean and George Wiltshire. The Haytrees romped into a strong lead and the Wiltshires, despite a midway comeback, were unable to close the gap, losing 26-13.

The Abbott Cup for the club champion was between husband and wife, Sheila and Gordon Haytree.

Sheila was looking for revenge as she had already suffered defeat on finals day in the Joynson Pairs when Gordon and partner Robin Dibdin had won by one shot after 21 ends. It was not her day, however. ‘Nobby’ was on top form, using the long jack to great effect as he surged to a 21-8 victory.

The club were grateful to competitions organiser Dennis Ling who persevered in getting all the games played after the rain had spoiled his original plans.

There will be carpet bowls during the winter at Frensham Royal British Legion, starting late October on Wednesdays. Anyone interested can contact Chris Bonner on 01252 793668.
