Farnham’s second team earned their first win of the season with a six-wicket victory against Oxted and Limpsfield’s second team.

On a scorching afternoon, Farnham lost the toss and were asked to bowl first.

Opening up with the left-arm pairing of Josh Simmonds and Kasun Sumanasekera Farnham started brightly, but when two edges went begging off Simmonds it looked as though it could be a long day in the heat on a flat track and fast outfield.

Sumanasekera gained impressive swing to complement Simmonds’ pace, and brought one back into the pads of Oxted and Limpsfield opener Phil Trayner to get the much-needed breakthrough.

Mike O’Mahony replaced Sumanasekera and beat the bat regularly. The impressive Simmonds was replaced by Jake Hayden, who immediately broke through the defences of opener Richard Adamson.

Oxted never got away from Farnham, and O’Mahony outfoxed Edward Heaver with a dipping slower ball to dismiss him leg before wicket.

O’Mahony then pouched a catch at slip off the nagging accuracy of Hayden to leave Oxted and Limpsfield rocking at 90 for four.

With Hayden and O’Mahony shutting down the scoring at both ends with heat-defying spells of 14 and 13 overs respectively, a flurry of wickets fell to both, including a three-juggle catch at short cover by Gerry Wells-Cole. With O’Mahony finishing with three wickets and Hayden an impressive four for 35, Oxted and Limpsfield had staggered to 126 for nine.

Despite a mini recovery, the innings was ended at 143 when Mo Talha Qamar spun one back through the gate of number 11 Toby Cutmore.

Farnham set about chasing down the total after tea, but captain Daniel Wakely fell leg before wicket to the second ball of the innings.

When fellow opener Talha Qamar chipped the ball to mid-on for a duck, it looked as though Farnham could be finding a way to lose from a winning position.

Instead, 15-year-old Peter Brown and 16-year-old Evan Mann played solidly to take the wind out of Oxted and Limpsfield’s sails.

Brown mixed watchful defence with crunching boundaries to frustrate the bowlers.

Mann was dismissed, but 16-year-old Wells-Cole played a calm and mature innings to perfectly complement Brown.

Brown fell for 59, and with Farnham on 97 for four the game was in the balance.

However, Wells-Cole showed good composure to bring the team home with 35 not out, aided by a powerful 31 not out from Alexander Kardamilakis at number six.
