Farnham Cricket Club produced a measured and ultimately emphatic display to secure a 109-run victory over Dorking last Saturday in a match that saw composure triumph over chaos.
James Berry won the toss for Farnham and elected to bat, but they found themselves in early difficulty. The Dorking bowlers exploited helpful conditions with discipline, and Farnham’s top order stuttered badly. Thorpe scratched out a solitary run from 20 balls while Flack’s stay was over before it truly began.
But skipper Berry applied a calm, methodical hand. His 64 from 94 deliveries was a lesson in application – unhurried, precise and quietly authoritative.
Berry found a valuable ally in Tom Grimes, whose 41 helped stabilise proceedings. They added substance before a spirited cameo from Golding (27 not out), ably supported by Khan, lifted Farnham to a competitive, if not commanding, total of 184.
In reply, Dorking never settled. Will Graham found rhythm and movement, and once he struck the innings began to unravel. His brisk, probing and devastating opening spell removed four of the top six, including a fine delivery to knock back opener Chris Thurgood’s off stump for a duck.
Graham set the tone but Thorpe bowled with control and significant turn to claim three wickets of his own. Ahmad picked up two and Berry chipped in with a scalp to complete a comprehensive performance.
Only Kenway (29) offered resistance of note, briefly counter-attacking with a six, and from 41 for three Dorking slipped rapidly to 75 all out inside 28 overs, the innings ending in a flurry of wickets and forlorn glances.
It was a solid all-round performance from Farnham, led by a captain’s innings from Berry and a hostile new ball spell from Graham. The batting remains a touch fragile but the bowlers delivered with clinical efficiency.
