Badshot Lea produced a Jekyll and Hyde performance to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Guildford City on Tuesday night.

It was a tough encounter, with the Baggies producing some superb football before the interval to go 2-0 ahead, but then having to battle as Guildford had the ascendency after the break.

Cameron Gyeabour headed the Baggies ahead and Dean Rule bamboozled the defence to score the second, before a penalty put away by Aidan Brown reduced the arrears.

It came after they opened their Combined Counties Premier South season with a 2-0 win over Abbey Rangers, with George Frise and Rule finding the target.

“I thought we were excellent in the first half,” said co-manager Gavin Smith. “Although we have been winning, we have not been happy with the way we have been playing. We’ve looked dangerous but not been comfortable in possession.

“Everything clicked in the first half – the players turned up with a good mentality and we were a class above Guildford.

“After the break it didn’t happen – Guildford dominated the second half and we are lucky we have come away with all three points.

“It’s all well and good playing well for 45 minutes but if you can’t do it for 90 you are going to come unstuck.

“I think it’s a mental thing. When you are that good in the first half, if you can maintain it you go on and win by four or five. But if you can’t maintain it, it can kill you off.

“They’re still a young group and they’ll learn. We were nowhere near the same standard of the first half.

“Josh Stepney had probably the best half for ages, Mac Ford won every second ball and we won every header.

“The players are really annoyed with themselves and there’s some arguing in the dressing room, and that’s a good thing.

“They have seen how good they can be but the important thing is we have picked up three points.”

The Baggies take a break from the league on Saturday when they travel to Southern League Hamworthy in the FA Cup.

“The players will be up for that one – there will be something wrong if they’re not looking forward to playing a Step 4 club,” said Smith.

The following Tuesday, Badshot Lea are back in league action when they travel to play Frimley Green.
