Farnham Town 3, Walton & Hersham 0
TWO goals from Charlie Oakley and a third from Logan Peel not only ensured cup progress for Fanham Town on Tuesday night, but they also eased the heartache of two dropped league points three days earlier.
Leading 1-0 at home to British Airways seven minutes into stoppage time, ahead courtesy of a goal from impressive midfielder Jo Sowden, Town boss Luke Turkington could only look on in disbelief as his side conceded an equaliser from a corner.
“I’m still fuming about it,” said Turkington.
“We were completely domnant but the strikers let me down that day. They never let me down. I just had this feeling in the back of my head ‘they are going to get something out of this’ and we just spoiled a good day at the office.
“There are 97 minutes on the clock and I’m thinking ‘when is this ever going to end?’ and a corner comes in, last kick of the game, the goalkeeper comes out, he’s nowhere near it and it’s scrambled in in the confusion.
“I was livid. The time didn’t matter, it was the concentration of our boys and the fact that we couldn’t see the game out that really grated on me, and I let them know.
“We have definitely dropped two points. In every department we were completely dominant and we had the chances to make the game safe well before that. The only bit we didn’t dominate was seeing the game out.”
The result leaves Farnham in third place ahead of two tough league games – away at Epsom & Ewell tomorrow followed by Walton & Hersham away on October 5.
But Turkington was given the perfect tonic to last weekend’s disappointment when his side eased into the third round of the Premier Challenge Cup with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Walton & Hersham on Tuesday.
“It was a good reply,” said the boss, “and I would like to think it’s a dress rehearsal for the big one with Walton & Hersham in ten days time in the league.
“I think the players who played on Tuesday night have given me a selection headache for Saturday because they took their opportunities. We’ve got a good squad and I hope they are going to push one another to our target of going up.”
Farnham, who welcomed back inflential skipper Jacob McDonald on Tuesday, have more cup action on the horizon, but for Turkington, big league games are starting to loom large as the club strive for promotion to the Premier Division of the Combined Counties League.
“We’ve got two tough games coming up but what’s pleasing at this stage is that we’ve more or less played everyone in the top half of the table, so we haven’t really faced anyone in the bottom half,” he said.
“If we can get points out of the next two games then we can see where we are in the table after eight to ten games, and if we are in the mix then I feel strongly that we can get the job done and get promoted. That’s the main aim. I’ve already told the players that because it’s important for them to focus on where they want to be.
“Some players have already been there, some haven’t and it’s their opportunity to get to the next level.”
Tomorrow’s league game at Chipstead, where Epsom & Ewell play their home games, kicks-off at 3pm.
