Farnham Town manager Paul Johnson hailed his side's “perfect response” after they won 2-0 at Chelmsford City in the National League South.

Second-half goals from Billy Clifford and Darryl Sanders got the Town immediately back to winning ways after Saturday’s defeat at Dover Athletic.

Chelmsford were unbeaten in the league heading into the game, and Johnson was delighted with his team’s display as they picked up all three points.

“It was a perfect response,” said Johnson. “I thought the boys were superb. Everything was spot on.

“Chelmsford are always in games and are a solid outfit who don't commit too many bodies forward and are quite shored up at the back, but they just couldn’t get to grips with us.

“We told the players before the game it’s important to come here and impose themselves early on, get on the ball and be brave with it. The boys did that really well and we dictated the game.

“We got in so many good positions in the first half with cutbacks and were really wasteful in that department, but we were getting in every time.”

The Town opened the scoring in the 61st minute when Clifford headed home from substitute Bobby-Joe Taylor’s corner, and Johnson felt the goal had been coming.

“Billy attacked it really well,” said Johnson. “Bobby came on and hit it with good pace into a good area.

“The pitch is quite narrow. When you take set pieces you really fancy yourself to whip one in with how tight it is, and Bobby delivered.”

Sanders scored Farnham’s second in stoppage time to wrap up the three points, but Johnson was pleased with how his side managed the closing stages before then to maintain their lead.

“You've got to stand up and be counted in the last 20 minutes,” said Johnson.

“Ryan Kinnane won his headers and dictated the backline, and Mat Mackenzie was everywhere.

“We looked solid, and it was a matter of time before we got the second.”
