Farnham Town 0, Woodley United 3

THREE goals in the first half an hour condemned Farnham Town to a tame defeat at the hands of Hellenic League side Woodley United in the second round of the Aldershot Senior Cup at the Memorial Ground on Tuesday night.

Ed Scurfield stepped up as the man between the sticks for the home side following the departure of first-choice goalkeeper Stuart Norman last week – and he was in action early on when Woodley’s Hawkins tested his diving reflexes, forcing Scurfield to get down low and make the save.

Town, facing a fixture backlog after a spate of postponements in recent weeks, had precious few chances of note all night – Danny Turner’s teasing cross somehow being deflected wide for a corner, Jack Falvey forcing the Woodley goalkeeper into a fingertip save, and skipper Elliot Cardona heading Muctaru Conteh’s cross narrowly over the crossbar.

But by then Town had already fallen behind, with Scurfield left rooted to the spot as Hawkins found the net with a smart header in the seventh minute.

Minutes later Town found themselves 3-0 down as Woodley scored two quick goals to kill off the tie, the third from a long-range free kick which bounced awkwardly in front of Scurfield and Briggs was on hand to drill the ball home from point-blank range.

And in all honesty Woodley could have had more goals, a reality typified by Jewell’s wasteful late effort when he fired wide of the post when it would surely have been easier to score.

nOn Saturday, Farnham Town host rock-bottom Cove in Division One of the Combined Counties League at the Memorial Ground as they look to reignite their promotion push (kick-off 3pm).
