GARY Waddock has signed two more players as his largely rebuilt Aldershot Town squad continues to take shape.

The Shots have recruited Woking goalkeeper Jake Cole and Watford striker Bernard Mensah, both on one-year contracts.

Cole, 30, from Hammersmith, played 50 games for the Cards last season and made the most saves of any goalkeeper in the Vanarama National League. He has made over 200 Football League appearances with QPR, Barnet and Plymouth, and was named Barnet’s Player of the Year for the 2009-10 season.

He spent six seasons at Loftus Road – five of which were as a Championship club – but played most games in loan spells with Hayes, AFC Wimbledon, Farnborough, Oxford United and Barnet. He joined Woking in July 2014, and made 74 appearances.

“He’s an experienced goalkeeper and he knows this level well,” said manager Waddock who worked with Cole at the QPR Academy. “I was surprised that he is only 30. It’s a relatively young age for a goalkeeper, but he’s got good Football League experience and that will be key for us. He’ll bring a lot to the dressing-room and to the team.

“He’s aware of how we want to play and he’ll get us playing out from the back,” explained Waddock of Cole’s renowned quick and accurate distribution, “but also playing some quick, counter-attacking football as well, so his distribution will be key.”

Bernard Mensah, just 21, can play in attack or on the wing and is a highly rated graduate of the Watford academy, making two first-team appearances at Vicarage Road. Born in Hounslow of Ghanaian descent, Mensah helped Watford reached the semi-finals of February’s Sait Nagjee Trophy, held in India and featuring eight teams from Europe and South America.

He has had loan spells at Braintree and Barnet, where he worked with Waddock. “His training sessions were second-to-none – they were hard work but also fun, he pushed you and he got the best out of you,” said Mensah. “As well as being a good person, he is a great coach. He’s a players’ kind of manager.”

Waddock said: “He could probably have stayed at a higher level and in many ways we are fortunate to get him. But he can use this move as a platform to get more experience. If he can be consistent in his performances that will help him and it’s certainly going to help us too.”
