ALDERSHOT Town have been drawn away to League One side Shrewsbury in the first round proper of the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday, November 4.
Older fans will hope that the Shots can reprise the classic display they gave back in 1979 when the old Aldershot FC, under manager Tom McAnearney, came close to knocking out Shrewsbury in the fifth round of the Cup.
The Shrews, managed by Paul Hurst and with former Aldershot players Alex Rodman and Omar Beckles amongst their squad, are top of League One and remain the only unbeaten side in the Football League, following their 4-0 win over Bristol Rovers on Tuesday.
Back in February 1979, Shrewsbury ended Aldershot’s best FA Cup run to date in the fifth round, but only after a replay.
The first game ended 2-2 at the old Rec, Aldershot having given one of their finest performances in front of nearly 12,000 spectators. Highly-rated striker John?Dungworth scored both Aldershot’s goals.
Dungworth also scored in the replay, but Shrewsbury won 3-1 after extra time at Gay Meadow. The same season, Graham Turner’s side won promotion to Division Two, where the Shrews remained for ten years.
The clubs featured in another high-profile match in the 2003-04 season. Both then in the Football Conference, they met in the play-off final at Stoke City’s new Britannia Stadium. Terry Brown’s Shots came within a whisker of a surprise return to the Football League, Shrewsbury edging through in a penalty shoot-out after the game had ended 1-1.
