FARNHAM Shooting Stars U13 floorball team chose Guy Fawkes weekend to give some spectacular displays in the TCL Youth League.
They met the newly formed Meon Hounds in their opening match and gave a textbook lesson in one-touch passing and top-corner goals, with Sam Dring, Ossi Potter, Jude Osborn and Linus Raitio all scoring in the 13-2 win.
The second match was against Bees whose borrowed goalkeeper, Ellen Dring, was up against her two brothers in the Stars squad. Ellen, who played an amazing six games, made some brilliant saves. However, Robbie Dring shot past his sister for his first ever league goal, while Will Rixon’s hat-trick helped the Farnham side to an 8-0 win.
Shooting Stars then faced their toughest U13 challenge when they met Ilmington Primary School who had also won all their opening four games.
Both teams defended strongly and the match was goalless for a long time until Stars found their hero, Ben Funk hitting the net with two great shots, earning him the day’s Most Valuable Player award.
IPSE managed to claw one back late on – an unlucky moment for Stars keeper Rory Campbell who took the Player’s Award for his many fine saves – but the Stars hung on to win 2-1.
The Farnham Fireballs U16 team had a baptism of fire in their first match which was against the league and national champions, the Arrows. Their top scorer, Will Palmer, was allowed just one moment unmarked in front of goal and duly scored for Arrows who then took a healthy 3-0 lead.
It looked ominous for the Fireballs, but they never gave up and stormed back in the second period.
Aleksi Potter weaved his way through to score a brilliant solo goal and this inspired Farnham into a superb fightback as they emerged 7-6 winners of a thrilling match.
