MICHAEL Walberton of Farnham Runners topped the 2015-2016 Rushmoor Parkrun men’s table with a record tally of 4,120 points.
Parkrun is a free 5km series, held on Saturday morning at parks throughout the country. The Rushmoor event had over 2,000 runners competing in this its second season.
Walberton, running in the men’s 55-60 age group, is the fourth Farnham Runners member to top a Parkrun league. After completing 45 out of 51 runs, he said: “Runners of my vintage don’t win very much, so I was surprised and delighted with this year’s result. Parkrun is a terrific event for runners of all ages and abilities.”
His Farnham Runners team-mate, Martin Billett, was just as delighted to take second place in the same category with 3,404 points and they received their trophies at the event.
Both have achieved high ‘age grading’ percentages, which are based on world records for each age group. Walberton’s best time of 19mins 00 gave him 81.58% (80% is recognised as national standard), while Billett’s best of 19-58 puts him on 78.30%.
A number of other Farnham members did well at Rushmoor, including Jason East (11th) and Scott Salmon (14th).
Walberton, meanwhile, plans to step up a distance and compete in next year’s London Marathon.
Previous Farnham Runners men’s points winners were Mike Anderson at both Bushy Park (2008) and Frimley Lodge (2011), Steve Gillingham at Basingstoke (2010) and Tim Cummins at Alice Holt (2015).
A RECORD entry of 44 Farnham Runners completed the Alton Ten, one of the Hampshire Road Race League dates.
The men’s A team should win promotion back to the top flight after their second place in Division Two, keeping them top on aggregate. They were led by Richard Lovejoy who clocked 1hr 03mins 46secs for an excellent 17th place out of 478. He was well backed up by Andrew Ellison (31st in 1-06-10), Stuart Haig (1-08-51) and James Clarke (1-09-12).
Charlie Hill-Venning (1-09-47) led in the B string that took third on the day for an aggregate fifth, making them safe in B Division One. The other three scorers were Gerald Wyatt (1-13-04), John Hill-Venning (1-13-41) and John Phillips (1-13-58).
Farnham’s C runners could still be promoted to their top division, thanks to the efforts of Ian Marshall (1-14-16), Mike Taylor (1-14-55), Rob Gilchrist (1-15-23) and Terry Copeland (1-17-08).
The ladies A, sixth on the day, drop to sixth in Division One. The reliable Eloise Stradling led them in, 12th senior lady in 1-22-07. Alice Healy, gaining confidence with every race, was 13th in a personal best 1-23-20 and Jane Georghiou, who recently won an age-group bronze medal at the British Masters 10k championship at the Olympic Park, completed the team in 1-25-17 (1st W60).
Linda Tyler, on her Farnham debut, headed the Bs in 1-29-03 (5th W55). Then came Tina Harrison (1-29-13) and Billy McCulloch (1-30-20). The team came fifth on the day, maintaining sixth in Division? Two with two matches to go.
