ALDERSHOT, Farnham & District AC monopolised the team events for younger age-groups in the Reebok international cross-country meeting at Margate, although they failed to provide an individual winner.

Chris Welch came closest with third in the U/13 boys' contest, 11 seconds behind Blackburn's Curtis Pearce and ony two seconds behind Thomas Carpenter of Westbury. Joshua Arnold, seventh, and Christopher Bounds, eighth, were the other members of AFD's winning trio.

Despite some disappointing performances, the club's U/15 boys and girls, as well as the U/13 girls, were each led to victory by fourth-placed runners.

Louise Eley's U/13 team-mates were Abigail Salter, 14th, and Sarah Burgin, 20th. Laurence Cox was joined by fellow U/15s James Whittington (8th) and Stephen Blake (10th). Hannah Jones was backed up by Emma Pallant in 11th and Stephanie Twell, 18th.

They were missing Charlotte Browning who tackled the junior trial for next month's European Championships. She was seventh U/17 home, with AFD colleagues Leonie Smith and Laura Tanner 14th and 24th respectively.

The club's U/17 men were second to a team representing the Flemish Athletic Federation. James Ellis was ninth, Martin Mashford 24th and Andrew Friend 30th.

The U/20 men were third to sides from England and Eire. AFD's trio comprised David Udal, 24th, Steve Ablitt, 25th, and Phil Banks, 29th.

The club's biggest disappointment was probably Chris Thompson not making the senior men's squad for the Europeans. Fastest in both the national cross-country and road relays recently, he finished 10th.

Nick Anderson, 27th, and Brian Stopher, 43rd, were his scoring partners in a team that came fourth.

Another group of senior men from AFD had finished third in the previous day's Surrey League, led by Dan McCarthy in 13th.

The previous weekend, in the national veterans' cross-country relay championships, the club had secured its first success at over-60 level. Terry Riles, Dave Gibson, and Les Presland, the quickest individual competitor, combined for a set of silver medals.
