THE Alton Show 2002 is expected to return in fighting spirit this year, and with it an opportunity to experience Òthe countryside at work and playÓ in the glorious setting of Froyle Park.

To be held on Sunday, July 14, and organised by the North East Hants Agricultural Association, the event will offer not only an action-packed day for the whole family but a showcase for the local farming community.

Cancelled last year because of the foot-and-mouth crisis, this yearÕs show will bounce back with cattle and sheep classes, heavy horses, private driving classes, a fun dog show, and a horse show which is to expand to four rings to accommodate a growing number of classes.

Ring one will be dedicated to the children with classes ranging from first and lead rein ponies to Thelwell look-alikes, while rings two and three will accommodate horse and pony working hunters, ridden and in-hand classes for hunters, Arabs and part-bred Arabs, riding horses and ponies, native ponies, cobs and veterans.

Ring four will host an open clear round rustic jumping course.

It will be supported by a Family Fun Dog Show, starting at 11 am, which will offer 12 classes with entries on the day.

Classes will range from ÔDog most like its ownerÕ to ÔDog with the waggiest tailÕ, Best child handlerÕ and ÔBest Heinz 57Õ variety. First prize winners from each class will go into the championship which will be held early in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the main ring will see the welcome return of terrier racing, organised by Bill Griffiths who invites owners to Òbring you own terrier and join in the fun.Ó In fact, some races will be open to non-terriers and children will also be invited to join in!

In addition visitors will be able to enjoy the thrills and spills provided by the Royal Artillery Motor Cycle Display Team, to include a rolling wall and mini bikes. Winners of the cattle and sheep classes will join the Grand Parade of livestock, as will competitors in the Heavy Horse and Private Driving classes.

Outside the arena there will be a wealth of stands and sideshows including the ever popular craft and food tents, the countryside area and the village green with lots of music and masses of other first class attractions all around the showground.

Parking will be free and there will be a special bus service from the town to the showground - details to follow.
