ANCIENT Egypt was brought to life in Farnham library during the school half-term holiday when the Friends of Farnham Library hosted a free coffee and cake morning together with a children's entertainment on an Egyptian theme. While the adults enjoyed their coffee and cakes, more than 40 children saw a short film about life in ancient Egypt, the rituals and beliefs and the opening of the tomb of Tutankhamun. Gilly Stewart, dressed as Queen Kyie, read a story about the lotus flower and taught some hieroglyphics and how to say hello and welcome in Egyptian. A colouring competition was held with pictures of Egyptian pharaohs and queens, and then the children each decorated their own splendid headdress with jewels. The Friends have raised over £l,400 during the past l8 months from the sale of children's secondhand books and this enables them to hold these free coffee and cake mornings during the school holidays, said the friends' chairman. The events help bring in many people who might not normally come to the library and it is a great advertisement for all the many facilities which the library has to offer.
