A LOCAL woman, who recently discovered her brother's grave had been vandalised, is to be charged £50 by Farnham Town Council to allow a stone mason access to the site to make the repairs. Anne Turner from Frith End, who has been tending her brother's grave in Farnham cemetery for years, discovered to her horror that the grave, which also holds the ashes of her parents, had been vandalised. A stone cross with an angel attached had been broken off, which has left Mrs Turner understandably upset and bemused by the whole incident. What makes the situation worse, according to Anne, was beng told by the council that she must pay them £50 to allow a stone mason to enter the graveyard on her behalf and make the necessary repairs and if she does not pay the charge she could be fined for trespassing. Mrs Turner has trouble understanding the mind of the people who vandalised the grave and wondered what kind of people they could be. Anne said: "Whoever did this has no respect for the dead, so whatever is their attitude towards the living? If only they realise how upsetting it was and what effect it has had on me. "The grave has been here since 1939 and my parents tended it weekly during their lifetime and I still do regularly." Anne had even less positive things to say about Farnham Town Council, which is forcing her to pay an administration charge just to get the stone cross repaired. Anne continued: "There was a note left on the grave by the council saying that they were aware of the damage and left a telephone number to ring, which I duly did. "I now realise why the report about cemetery charges was in The Herald and people are extremely angry, like myself. I was told I would be sent a list of stone masons recommended by them, who we had to have our repair done by. "There would also be a £50 charge by the council to enable the work to be carried out, otherwise I would get a fine for trespassing. "When do we start paying an entrance fee to the cemetery to put flowers on the grave? What is happening to our dear old Farnham?"
