AN ELDERLY woman in Elstead had £4,400 stolen from her house last Wednesday by two bogus callers, making her the fifth person in nearly a month to fall victim in this way.

The men, who claimed to be water board workers, told her the stop-cock needed to be turned off as there was a problem with the supply.

The 75-year-old invited them in and while the first man distracted her, the second offender took a substantial amount of cash from the lounge and main bedroom.

Half an hour before this, at 6 pm, two callers fitting the same description failed to con their way into a 74-year-old woman's home in Milford.

This comes just a few days after two female pensioners - this time in their mid-eighties - were robbed of a total of £350 at their homes in Haselmere and Petworth.

These robberies, which occurred on Friday May 11, were not committed by a pair of men on this occasion, but by single callers who both said they worked for a water company.

Two weeks before these crimes were reported, thieves using the same tactics targeted another two women in Farnham, making off with more than £500.

Descriptions have been issued of the offenders in the latest robbery.

One man is white, about 6 feet tall and of medium build with mousy brown, untidy hair and a long face. He had a cockney accent, was wearing grey clothing and is aged between 18 and 20.-

The other is also white, but slightly shorter and with short dark hair. He was wearing red or brown clothing.

Police advise that members of the public should never let strangers into their house unless they are absolutely sure of his or her identity.
