SURREY police have released an e-fit of a man responsible for conning an elderly Farnham couple out of several thousand pounds in a distraction burglary last Tuesday. At around 3-30 pm, a man tricked his way into a warden-controlled flat in West Street occupied by an 82-year-old man and his 75- year-old wife, by pretending to be an undercover police officer. He showed the woman a fake gold-coloured police badge and stated he and his team were on surveillance in the area. He told them that the pensioners had been targeted by a group who were responsible for a number of burglaries, and then said he wanted to make sure that their money was in a safe place. He stayed for more than an hour and persuaded the elderly man to remove more than £3,000 from its hiding place and then pretended to hide the money in a better place. The conman pocketed the cash and left the property soon afterwards. It would appear the man was not working alone as he received a call from an accomplice on his mobile phone, stating "I'm with them now". The suspect is described as a white man, aged 30-35 years, six feet tall, of slim build with medium length wavy black hair, dark brown eyes, and healthy looking skin. He is well spoken and has a local accent. He was smartly dressed in dark trousers, black shoes, white shirt, dark tie, and a fake suede waist length brown jacket. Anyone with information is asked to contact the officer in the case, Dc Emma Hampson, at Farnham CID on 0845 125 2222. Alternatively calls can be made anonymously and free of charge to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. Police are warning other elderly or vulnerable people to be on their guard and to always inspect ID cards closely. If in any doubt, contact the police or the company the caller comes from, to ask for verification. If you were not expecting someone to call, a genuine caller will not mind waiting outside while you do this. Find the phone number from the phone book.
