A driver narrowly escaped serious injury when a tree fell onto the roof of his car. The incident happened at 3-30 pm on Saturday as the man was driving along the B3349 towards Odiham. Two ambulance crews and a fire crew attended the scene outside the Golden Pot Pub. The driver, a male in his 60s, suffered back injuries and following initial assessment and treatment at the roadside was taken to the North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke. Pc Richard Turner, from Whitehill Traffic Unit, told The Herald: "The gentleman had a very lucky escape. If he had been just a fraction ahead, he would have been hit by the trunk of the tree. "As his car passed under the tree, it fell and we can only assume that he drove through the outer branches. "The driver then lost control of the vehicle and went into the field next to the road. The vehicle came to a halt at the boundary of someone's garden, luckily causing no damage or harm to others. "It took fire crews about half an hour to cut the roof from the silver Volvo and release the man," added Pc Turner. The driver has since been released from hospital and is believed to be recovering at home.
