STUDENTS have quite literally ‘spent a penny’ for a good cause at Weydon School, raising £320 for the charity Toilet Twinning.
In exchange for using a toilet in the design and technology corridor, pupils were asked to make a donation to the charity to mark World Toilet Day.
The proceeds of this ‘toilet toll’ have since been used to build a new toilet block at a school in Zambia, as well as a single toilet for a community in Malawi.
Weydon has also now ‘twinned’ its student loos with its African counterparts and a plaque has been placed on the wall outside the
toilets.
The fundraising effort was led by humanities student leaders Toby Mallet, Rebecca Fletcher and Nicole Cracknell.
Ben Bingham, Weydon’s head of humanities, said: “This is an amazing achievement and we are very proud of our student leaders who made this happen.
“We would like to thank all students who contributed money to the ‘toilet toll’ over the three days and especially to those students who gave up their free time to collect money on the toilet doors.”
