A SHACK on a tiny island on the River Wey has been home for the last week for the three "Elstead Survivors", who hope to raise £10,000 for charity.
Tristian Roberts, Jeremy Fisk and Kevin Knutt were due to leave their temporary home, 20 yards downstream of the Elstead Mill restaurant tonight (Friday), having subjected themselves to a week of challenges to raise money for GUTS (Guildford Undetected Tumour Charity), and Children in Need.
Radio listeners were kept abreast of events with daily updates on 96.4 FM The Eagle, and through their website: http://www.elsteadsurvivors.co.uk">www.elsteadsurvivors.co.uk
After preparing a barbecue on Saturday night for the 12 people who donated the most money, things got tougher on Sunday, with Trist, Jez and Kev having to stand on a barrel from noon until 9 pm - with the public invited to throw "something horrible" at the intrepid challengers.
On Monday they had to build a raft and sail around the island five times. On Tuesday, there was what the trio described as a "three-stage race" and on Thursday they were going to accept the best challenges suggested by visitors to their website.
For their last day there were due to be tethered balloon flights at the Mill to raise charity money, but not before the survivors were due to leave the island with a rendition of YMCA (wearing their swimming trunks).
Their task was not easy. Temperatures drop considerably at night and the river is prone to flooding.
The survivors each took a protective sleeping bag and life jacket with them.
Drinking water and rice were available twice a day. Other food and drink had to be earned with the completion of tasks.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the survivors had raised £4,400.
